Followership Program - How To Get Your New Team Behind You

New Manager = New Directions = New Strategies

The arrival of a new boss is a pivotal time for a department or organization and can be especially disruptive in a sales and marketing environment where production schedules and sales quotas must be maintained. A transition is like being between trapezes – there’s nothing to hold onto. Although the manager’s name changes overnight, the responses to the change by the individuals affected takes longer and can’t be ignored. Instead of relying on trial and error to get through this time, Prize Inside offers a change program created specifically to help in times of transition.

Designed for new managers and senior staff in sales and marketing, the Followership Program helps your organization quickly recognize and deal with problems and take advantage of opportunities that appear in the work environment during a major change in leadership. The transition process is streamlined by having a change program that provides strategies that allow new managers and teams to more quickly adjust to the transition and get to the next stage – the new beginning where creativity can flourish, individuals feel a sense of relief and promise.

People work better when they know what is expected of them and what they are supposed to do. Employees may face changes in job responsibilities as well as need to make behavioral and attitudinal shifts. Employees will have valid concerns regarding reporting relationships, expectations, and shifting responsibilities during this time of ambiguity. Some employees will feel disenfranchised, forgotten or wounded.

This intensive program has three main parts: our initial meeting with the new manager; telephone interviews with individual team members; and a two to three day group retreat with the new manager and the team members. This program can accommodate up to 22 people.

Workshop Content

1. The Manager’s Assessment

Confidential, in-person meeting or telephone interview with new manager which will last from one half to one day, depending on which assessment tools are included. It can be conducted in person or over the phone. The purpose of this interview is to help the new manger crystallize his/her thinking regarding the following:

* Current Situation: How things are now with manager and team.
* Directions: What new objectives and strategies will the new manager require.
* Accountability: Outline the chain of command for manager and team members.
* Expectations: Determine new or changed job responsibilities for team members.
* Commitment: Define manager’s expectations for him/herself to the Team.
* Work Environment: What changes will be needed for team to be motivated, productive, and accountable.

To supplement this assessment, an option is to use the Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator and other standardized assessment tools to identify manager’s key aspects of personality and behavior in the areas of:

* Leadership
* Communication
* Problem solving
* Decision making
* Interpersonal relations
* Dealing with change

When the Manager’s Assessment is complete, the new manager will have gained a clear understanding, from his/her perspective, of these elements:

* What are the manager’s leadership, communication, problem solving, and decision making styles and how do they affect others in the organization.
* What is the current climate in the department and what needs to change.
* What are the new vision, major goals, and expectations for the department.
* How will responsibility be delegated to individual team members.
* What is the best method to communicate these changes to individual team members and the team as a whole.
* How to motivate the team to support the changes and thrive in the new environment.

2. The Team’s Assessment

Confidential telephone interviews with individual team members to discuss each team member’s:

* Current understanding of the organization’s business objectives and company vision.
* Understanding of his/her job responsibilities.
* Expectations and concerns regarding management.
* View of decision making process and accountability.
* Assessment of the resources available to do his/her job and what other resources may be needed to enhance performance.

To supplement the individual team members’ assessments, an option is to use the Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator or other standardized assessment tools in addition to the individual phone interviews. These assessment tools help identify each team member’s key aspects of personality and behavior in the areas of:

* Leadership
* Communication
* Problem solving
* Decision making
* Interpersonal relations
* Dealing with change

When the Team’s Assessment is complete, Prize Inside will compile and merge the information learned during the individual interviews and use it to design a retreat for the manager and team members.

Depending upon number of participants and the goals of the retreat, it will last two to three days. If ten or less team members will be attending the retreat in Part 3 of the program, we will conduct the Part 2 interviews with the entire team. If more than ten members will be attending the retreat, we may need to interview a representative sample of the team.

3. Convergence: New Manager and Team Retreat

Using interactive exercises, group discussions, individual learning and observations in a fun and creative atmosphere, the manager and team will:

* Create a vision and objectives that the manager and team will support.
* Set initial expectations for team members and manager.
* Clarify the decision making process by defining the lines of authority and responsibility.
* Determine what additional resources are needed for the team to be more productive, motivated, and satisfied in their positions.
* Learn how the manager and team can work together more effectively.
* Recognize the interrelated dynamics of the manager’s and team’s communication and leadership styles.

At the end of the retreat, the manager and team will:
  • Know what is needed to become a cohesive and motivated department instead of working as separate entities.
  • Understand and commit to the department’s new visions and objectives.
  • Be clear on how each person contributes to the departments’ goals and objectives.
  • Know what the manager expects from each person and what the team can expect from the manager.
  • Understand their own and their colleagues’ preferred leadership and communication styles and how it impacts relationships and teamwork.
  • Learn how to better handle conflict and change.
  • Learn to communicate more openly and more effectively with one another in order to get better results.
  • Come away with an action plan for implementing initiatives developed by manager and team.
This program is customized to meet the specific needs of your department or organization. This is a highly interactive session with lots of interaction between the facilitator and participants, group and individual exercises.

Follow-Up Recommended To Make It Stick:
According to a study by the International Personnel Management Association, training alone increased productivity by 22.4%, while training plus coaching increased productivity by 88%. Prize Inside can provide Group Coaching sessions by phone as a follow-up to this retreat to reinforce the lessons learned and to motivate working on individual goals.

Communicating For Non-Psychics

Workshop for Senior Managers, Team Leaders, and Team Members

Learning how to communicate more effectively shouldn’t mean you have to become a psychic and practice mind reading with your co-workers. Studies show that managers and team members who understand their own personalities, leadership and communication styles, and who recognize the communication styles of others are more successful, communicate more clearly, and are more effective in their jobs. Plus, they make better leaders.

In this fun and interactive workshop, we use the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) to identify each participant’s communication and leadership preferences.

Strengths and potential weaknesses are recognized so they can be either enhanced or corrected. Participants gain a new perspective on how their communication preferences affect their own interpersonal effectiveness when they are communicating with colleagues, staff, or their boss.

Facilitated by Prize Inside, the participants will learn to recognize similarities and differences among their different preference types. The focus will be for each participant to understand the defining characteristics of their own preferred communication and leadership style, and how to discern and adapt to their co-workers’ preferred communication style preferences.

The one-day workshop is intended for managers or team leaders and their staff. Practical exercises help participants remember the lessons learned and make it easy for participants to incorporate their learning into their everyday work life.

The one-day workshop is customized to meet the specific needs of your department or organization and includes multiple exercises between the facilitator and participants. This workshop will accommodate up to 25 participants.

Workshop Content

Testing … Testing … 1 2 3:
As a preliminary to the workshop, each participant is administered the MBTI to identify his or her own personal communication and leadership style preference. A MBTI type report is subsequently provided to each participant at the workshop.

Intro to Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator:

During the first part of the workshop, participants will receive an introduction to the MBTI sixteen personality types. After receiving information about their own specific type, participants will learn about the eight personality preferences that indicate how people are energized, gather and process information, and orient themselves toward the outside world.

As an option, Prize Inside can conduct a short one-on-one feedback session with any participant who needs to review the results of MBTI compared to his/her self-assessment selections. This session will allow each person to confirm his/her personality type preference.

Explore Team Dynamics:

After the participants understand their own communication style preferences, the group will explore the team’s dynamics from five different perspectives:

1. Team type preferences
2. Preferred communication styles by team
3. How team interacts as a group
4. How team prefers to be lead
5. How each team member might react under stress

This will help the team leader and members to see how the team is a whole, and how each person contributes to the team. It will help each team member learn how to enhance cooperation among their colleagues who have different work or communication style preferences.

Results:

By the end of this session, the team will have developed goals and an action plan for making their team more effective in order to make their organization more successful. The workshop participants will:
  • Understand the concepts of MBTI and their individual MBTI preferences.
  • Learn techniques to communicate more openly and more effectively with one another in order to get better results.
  • Become more cohesive as a team and work better as a group.
  • Understand each participant’s preferred leadership and communication style, and how this affects internal teamwork and client relationships.
  • Learn how to better handle conflict and change.
  • Have enhanced ability to adapt to other communication styles.
Follow-Up To Make It Stick

According to a study by the International Personnel Management Association, training alone increased productivity by 22.4%, while training plus coaching increased productivity by 88%. Prize Inside can provide Group Coaching sessions by phone as a follow-up to this retreat to reinforce the lessons learned and to motivate working on individual goals.

Can We Talk? Business Conversation Skills Program

A Workshop for Managers or Teams

Ever wondered why some conversations seem to go better than others? We’ve all had to give difficult news to a client or colleague and asked … "what’s the best way to make this conversation turn out well?" When a lot is at stake, emotions can quickly get in the way and cloud the picture. This problem is more common than many business people realize.

Here are a few examples of common business interactions where communicating can become difficult:

  • You’ve got to tell one of your major clients about unexpected project cost increases.
  • Your new hire is not performing to the standards you both agreed upon.
  • You need to talk with your boss about an overdue promotion.
  • A colleague continues to ask you to shoulder more of the work due to a recent illness.
This workshop for managers and/or teams is customized to meet the specific needs of your department or organization and includes multiple exercises between the facilitator and participants. It is designed to increase the level of success when important conversations are conducted with staff, boss, colleagues, customers and vendors.

The one-day workshop will accommodate up to 25 participants.

Workshop Content

Participants will be given a step by step approach for preparing to have the conversation, what to say during it, and how to assure appropriate follow up with what was agreed upon. Participants will design an actual conversation based upon one they need to conduct or one they already had that didn’t go as planned. They will role play with other participants to practice new techniques for creating effective conversations that get great results.
Participants will learn:
  • To employ techniques to achieve mutual agreement on the purpose of the conversation.
  • What strategies to use to achieve the desired outcome for the conversation.
  • How to anticipate issues that can rise unexpectedly and how to overcome them.
  • How to get feedback to learn if you’re being understood as you intend.
  • Techniques to stay focused and on track with the purpose of the conversation.
  • How to get agreement and commitment from the other person.

Retaining and Growing Talent Program

A Workshop for Managers, Team Leaders, and Supervisors

The single greatest challenge and expense organizations face today is acquiring and retaining key staff. Sometimes, competitive pressures and changing business objectives can lead to murky perceptions by team members regarding what is expected of them. When talented and key team members become confused, their motivation and work performance suffers.

More serious are the subsequent effects. Studies show that key staff frequently leave organizations because they have mediocre managers. If a supervisor is unskilled in defining expectations and accountability, or doesn’t communicate objectives clearly, frustration can mount and lead to the loss of a good worker.

Instead of being reactive and asking questions after key employees leave, companies can seek actively to understand just how satisfied their "star" employees are now. Employees find it easier to be candid when the sensitive questions being asked are not coming from the boss but from an independent consultant.

The Retaining and Growing Talent workshop uses objectivity and confidentiality to produce an evaluation of the company’s employee management practices and the subsequent effect on employee satisfaction. It will pinpoint strengths and weaknesses that should be enhanced or corrected.

The one-day workshop is customized to meet the specific needs of your department or organization and includes group and individual exercises. It is highly interactive among the facilitator and participants. It will accommodate up to 25 participants.

Workshop Content

Prior to the day of the workshop, we administer an assessment survey to each employee. The survey is based on two mammoth research studies on employee satisfaction conducted by the Gallup Organization over the last 25 years. It addresses twelve areas including job satisfaction, work environment, training needs, motivation, leadership, teamwork effectiveness, communication problems, and compensation.

At the workshop managers, team leaders and supervisors will receive a summary report of the survey results which will describe the current situation and serve as a benchmark for measuring improved changes over time.

Participants will learn:
  • The Twelve Success Factors for retaining their super stars.
  • How to create a better work environment that will increase key employee satisfaction and decrease employee turnover.
  • Ways to determine if they have the right people in the right jobs.
  • How to be a magnet for attracting the right people for the right jobs.
  • How to motivate their staff with incentives they really want (and it doesn’t have to be money).
  • How to set up environments for teams to become empowered, take responsibility, and be accountable.
  • What your key people need from you as a manager to be successful.

At the end of the session, participants will develop individual action plans for continuing their own leadership and team development to retain key talent.

Option:

We recommend that the survey be re-administered to the same group of employees three months after changes have been put into place and compared to the benchmark survey. This will provide a measure of how effective intervening changes have been and give direction for additional changes.

Keep the Vision ALIVE Program

A Workshop for Supervisors and Their Teams

Imagine a culture where all of your employees, not just management, take personal responsibility for regenerating the corporate vision every day -- a work environment where employees want to coach each other in effective ways that help them really live the vision. This workshop is designed to create and foster that kind of nurturing environment.

Many organizations struggle to get their visions to become memorable and incorporated into their employee’s work lives. The problem is that sometimes the visions just won’t "stick". A written description may be pinned to a wall or stuffed in a desk drawer but it usually lacks the day to day relevance to make any difference. Usually no one can recite the "vision" without looking at it first!

One famous example of how a corporate vision can breath life into an organization is at the famous Pike Place Fish Market in Seattle. The employees at Pike Place bring their business’s unique vision to life on the floor of their workplace every day. These fish mongers have been documented in a short film that uniquely demonstrates how to make a vision stick. They keep their passion for their work and their joy in doing it alive through a deep, daily and very personal commitment.

This workshop uses interactive exercises and discussions customized to participants’ specific needs to teach attendees how to:

  • Create a fun, creative, and productive work environment for their team
  • Live the corporate vision and take responsibility for knowing it, committing to it and taking responsibility for creating it …everyday.
  • Follow through with actions, be accountable, and contribute to the overall goals of the organization.
  • Coach their team with positive and constructive feedback on a regular basis.

At the end of this high-energy workshop, participants will create an accountability plan for incorporating the vision into the teams’ everyday work environment. The half-day workshop is for up to 30 participants.

Listening Under Pressure: How To Listen Program

A Workshop for Sales and Marketing Managers and Their Teams

What we hear is often not what was intended and this missed communication leads to the loss of much valuable information. Lost information means errors. Errors mean stress and stress often results in additional errors. Listening for the complete, intended message before we finish a communication can help reduce bother errors and stress.

Professionals can go through years of education without ever taking one course on how to listen to others. With so many distractions coming at us everyday, it’s no wonder we don’t listen well. What has it cost you in the past when you haven’t really been listening to your client, boss, staff … or even your spouse?! Here’s your opportunity to sharpen your listening skills and techniques to enhance your performance on the job and deepen business and personal relationships.

Listening Under Pressure provides needed exposure to a variety of skills that enable employees to understand customers’ needs. Having these skills saves time and money while reducing employee stress because problems are more quickly identified and solved. When employees have both the skills to understand customer needs and the ability to do something about those needs, genuine commitment to customer service is an easy next step.

This one-day interactive workshop is for sales and marketing managers and their teams who want to learn how to become better listeners, and those who need others to listen better to them. The program is for up to 25 participants.
